3.5"x5.5" Acrylic on Illustration Board Unframed $150
This is an old cottage —perhaps early- to mid-19th century--was torn down many many years ago. The painting was inspired by a small black and white photograph found in the 1817 Duncan House on Front Street.
Tidewater Gallery has been in its new home at 202 Main Street in Swansboro, for about a year--only two blocks from its previous location.
The new space, at the corner of Main and Water Streets, in the historic district, is in a century-old home that still retains its original bead board walls, heart pine floors and fireplaces - the perfect setting for a fine art gallery.
Tidewater Gallery is in its eleventh year, bringing the best fine art and fine crafts to coastal North Carolina residents and tourists. The gallery's collection of paintings, photographs and prints, by local and nationally known artists, also includes high quality ceramics and a wide selection of casual jewelry. Custom framing is also a specialty.
Tidewater Gallery is open year round. Its hours of operation are 10-5 each day. Its summer schedule is Tuesday through Saturday from June through September. The gallery is open Wednesday - Saturday in the fall and spring and its winter schedule, from January through March is Friday & Saturdays. Other times can be arranged by calling 910-325-0660 for an appointment.
1893 Bartley House - Now home to TIDEWATER GALLERY
James Thomas Bartley, born in South Carolina on April 27, 1864 to Edward Bartley and Annie Keman, came to Swansboro by way of Wilmington around 1893. He built this home for his bride - Georgia A. Smith, born to George W. and Missouri Smith, of Silverdale, NC, on August 23, 1870.
Bartley was a prominent local businessman - a retail merchant on Front Street. He was a former mayor of Swansboro but an unsuccessful candidate for Congress.
The house is known locally as being a rooming house. Perhaps Georgia took on boarders after James died - February 8,1943. Georgia died April 15, 1961 at the age of 90. They are both buried in the PineyGroveCemetery in Swansboro.
Swansboro
SWANSBORO's history began around 1730, when the first permanent settlement was established on the former site of an Algonquin Indian village at the mouth of the White Oak River. For over 150 years, travel by boat was the mode of transportation. Many visited, came for supplies and "courted" in BEAUFORT and vice versa - a 28 mile trip via Core Sound which was the inland waterway of the time. Therefore many descendants of these early families have ties to both seaside villages.
